Three
Today, Story had a day long play date with two of the most delightful neighbor girls. The six year old brought her coloring books, her make-up case and her pink flower purse. Her younger four year old sister wore a skirt over her pants and pink princess flip-flops. The older one begged to feed Story her lunch. The younger one climbed up into my lap while I was checking my email. At one point, we all cuddled on the couch watching Monsters vs. Aliens, the older nudged into my right side playing with my hair. The younger one rest her head on my shoulder and drew shapes on my hand. Story sat on my lap and pressed her head back into my chest. I sighed. Heaven.
It got me thinking about what a home with three little children would look like. And I was lost in the reverie until I heard the ominous voice of my husband, “you could end up with boys.”

Small Paul at Billion Dollar Babes

I like cute monkeys. Who doesn't? And perhaps that is why I love Small Paul, the kid line of Paul Frank. It's normally out of my budget, but that is why I stalk Billion Dollar Babes for certain designers. And just my luck, today is Small Paul Sale day at Billion Dollar Babes!!
Here are some of my picks for today:

This adorable onesie normally sells for $27.00, but is only $8.10 at BDB.

I priced this romper at $43.00 just a month ago in a children's boutique, and now it is only $12.90 at BDB. That's kinda awesome.
For the boys...

Sleeper is normally $36.00, but $10.80 at BDB.

And this super adorable PJ set would run you $43.00 at Bloomingdales, but is $12.90 for the next 24 hours at Billion Dollar Babes.
My friend Rachel loves Paul Frank. So you better get over there now and buy it before someone like Rachel snatches it all up!

Petit Bateau
When I woke up this morning, I saw there was a flash sale over at Billion Dollar Babes for one of my very favorite baby brands Petit Bateau. I first fell in love with their little french floral prints when I was shopping in an overpriced baby shop on Rittenhouse Square. They wanted to charge $35.00 for the below romper. Well Billion Dollar Babes has it on sale today for $12.25!! Isn't the little floral pattern exquisite?

My favorite steal is the animal print kimono onesie, normally $19.00but only $6.65 today!!

Get over there and shop!!

Magical Spaces for Children (7 days until D-Day)
39 weeks today! One week from my due date and the reality that a week from now I may have a baby on my lap still hasn’t really set in. We visited the doctor today and she said I'm 3 centimeters dilated - which means absolutely nothing. Apparently, I can walk around as dilated as 7 centimeters and it means nothing until I actually start to go into labor. I'm still sort of hoping that the baby just drops out one day in the kitchen while I'm making Red Velvet cupcakes. Now that would be a good birth story!
Ever since the appointment, I've been sluggish and quite crampy. So I looked for a little something on my favorite blogs to bring some cheer and I found all these fantastic and inspiring spaces sure to spark a little creativity. When my little lady comes into the world, re-decorating her room on an annual basis will be one of our favorite things to do. I'll keep these pics for inspiration!

My Favorite On-Line Resources for Baby Clothes (19 Days To Go)
Let me begin by saying that the last thing an expectant mother will need to buy is clothing. Between the announcement to friends and family that you are pregnant, the baby showers and the two weeks following your birth, you will likely be gifted with enough clothing for junior to avoid ever having to wear the same thing twice for the first year of her life. And yet, part of the thrill of impending motherhood is wandering the aisles of a baby store and marveling at the little onesies, tiny booties and adorable knitted caps.
“Look,” I said to Gabe when we were passing through the Anthropologie sale section
the other day. I picked up a tiny little knit dress and placed it in his hand.
“She is going to be that small when she is born.” I reminded him.
The little dress was dwarfed by my husbands hands. I was overcome with an urge to buy the entire little girl collection, so as to remember the moment. I resisted. Just as I resisted snatching up the entire Cherry Blossom Collection from Baby Gap.
Instead, I went home and searched my on-line resources for killer deals. So I have enough clothes for our little lady, I can look right? Below is a list of some of my favorite places to search, as requested by my friends from the Diner.
Membership Sites
- Billion Dollar Babes: I was once a platinum member for these New York sample sales. They travel with their stock, specializing in LA, London and New York designers. Their sales would attract lines around the block and then about two years ago, they started selling off their overstock with one-day only internet sales. Simply said, the offering is awesome. Last week, I broke down and bought the below dress and bloomer set by Flit and Flitter – I paid $9.95 for a piece currently being sold for $56.00 on the manufacturers web-site. On January 25th, BDB will be having a 24 hour sale on two of my favorite LA designers PAIGELAUREN (pictured above) and BabyStar.
- Ideeli: Similar to Gilt Group, but with different designers featured. Click here for your invite and start shopping right away for baby stuff and grown up designer fashions.
- Gilt Group: Click here for your invite to Gilt Group and this Saturday you can buy the super soft jersey cotton fashions of C&C California Kids. Also being featured this Saturday is an exquisite and expensive French label called Bonpoint. Bonpoint can be mad expensive, so I can’t wait to see what sort of prices are offered on Gilt.
On-Line Boutiques
After a quick review of my favorite membership sites, I did a quick check into the sale section of a few of myfavorite on-line baby boutiques:
I finished my search on ebay. The truth is, I only just discovered ebay and I’m already in love. My sister-in-law has a side business selling on ebay and puts together exquisite and hard to find sets from my favorite stores.
Thanks to the generosity of people like my mother and sister-in-law, I have no need to shop for my little girl. She is set through the first year of her life. But come that first birthday, I’m heading back to my on-line favorites to help her develop her baby style. Let’s hope the rest of you haven’t snatched up all the good stuff by then!

Nurseries - 23 Days to go...
We are about to get a roomie. Sure, she will be tiny, but she has so much stuff. Our new room mate has an affinity for pink and plastic. These two things will be a little out of place in our comfy abode that currently blends danish modern and Philly antique. Sigh. I wish we could give our little genius a room of her own and fill it with exotic animals, maps of all the places she will some day visit and cool Etsy prints. But alas, we stuff her pack'n'play in the corner and I dream of the nursery we will create when we move to Los Angeles in July.
Here are some of my faves:

Shop 'til I Pop - 24 Days to go
From the start, I was dead set on avoiding maternity shops completely. Yet, at twenty weeks pregnant I could no longer fit in my skinny jeans, so I made the cardinal mistake of visiting the local Destination Maternity Shop on Walnut Street.
Destination Maternity is a typical mall-style maternity wear shop filled with poor quality polyester designs offering no originality but priced as couture fashion. It is the only store in Center City where you are greeted within the first two minutes of entering the store. Normally, this would be a good thing. But there is something all together combative about the barrage of questions thrown at you like grenades within mere moments of walking through the door, “Can I help you?”, “Are you looking for something in particular?, “Do you want me to put that in a room for you?”
“I just walked in the door. I don’t even know what I’m holding in my hand right now.”
“Okay – well my name is Charisse, just let me know when you are ready. Do you know about our special Cord Blood Donation program?”
All I wanted to do was look at the racks of tacky t-shirts and unshaped pants. But Charisse wanted to follow me around the store, prey on my new mother fears and try to sell me things I just did not need.
“Do you have your nursing bras yet? You are going to breastfeed, aren’t you?”
“Charisse, I think I want to be alone. I’ll let you know if that changes,” I said.
But she only took a few steps back, shadowing me from six feet, instead of three.
I scanned the store for basic staples. I picked up a few t-shirts, but they were not soft, they were not shaped well and they were not thin or long enough to pull down over my enlarging hips. The leggings were thick and awkward, they looked shiny when you pulled them over your skin. I selected a dress from the rack and held it up to the light. The sewing was weak, the threads pulling out at the seams. The price tag read $176. It looked like something I could buy in the Juniors section at Macy’s for $34.99.
After thirty minutes of searching for something I might find special enough to buy, I purchased a pair of $25 tights while Charisse tried to sign me up for the mailing list, convince me to bank my cord blood and sell me a subscription to Parents Magazine.
I left the store feeling depressed. Did I really have to give up fashion for the rest of my pregnancy?
Well, the answer was no! I didn’t have to give up fashion, all I had to do was change my sizes and adapt my style. I marched down to Anthropologie’s sale room and started grabbing tunic tops off the racks. Tunic tops in one size over my normal 6, fit easily over my belly. Next, I grabbed soft, extra long tank tops for layering. I picked up a few ultra soft Ella Moss tees in extra long. I found every dress in the store that was high-waisted or meant to be worn with a belt. Boyfriend cardigans and open knits in medium and large went down to mid-thigh and looked great over all my new shirts. A heather grey bolero jacket marked down to $29.95 finished off my purchase. Thank God for a sale, the total came to $176.
Next, I headed over to the Gap. Here is where I bought my maternity essentials. While their maternity section offers the usual unattractive, stiff casual wear, they also have a few basic necessities. I found four things I absolutely loved:
- Super low-rise, uber comfy and ultra soft leggings in grey and black - $26.50
- Extra long, ribbed tanks – $19.50
- Jersey knit, over the hop, cowl neck turtlenecks - $24.99
- Dark wash, full panel, skinny jeans - $49.99
For pajama bottoms, I ordered Old Navy maternity from the online store. And to prep for the holiday party season, I hit the internet and tried these two on-line stores for affordable chic knit dresses and fashion forward separates.
- YesStyle.com (based in Hong Kong, but flat fee shipping to the US, this on-line gem offered the absolute cutest little chic pregnancy dresses and they were totally affordable).
- TopShop.com (This shirt, this sweater, this jacket, this tunic, and this last chance buy, will make you wish you could squeeze a few more months out of your maternity wardrobe!)
At the end of my shopping spree, bags and UPS boxes strewn around the bedroom, I felt renewed and refreshed. I didn't feel like hiding at home, I couldn't wait to get out and show off my belly in my super cool duds. And I was even more relieved that I would never have to set foot in a mall maternity shop.
Fashion for the pregnant lady doesn't have to be pricey and doesn't have to be boring. It just means you have to be a little more creative.
